Pique is 'to pick' and nique, 'little pieces'. Interestingly, the word in English can be taken positively and negatively; it could either mean to 'arouse and excite the senses', or to 'cause an irritated or resentful feeling'. How can a name like that not attract attention?
Its garden-patterned sofa seats and brick pillars conjure up images of tea parties, while enticing pictures of their desserts make an alluring backdrop.
The Roasted Chicken Caesar Salad ($14.80) didn't look as nice as its depiction on the menu. Scattered with bacon bits, croutons and small pieces of roasted chicken, it felt and tasted boring. The cold poached egg was bland, the chicken saltier than the bacon. Only the yummy garlic bread croutons left a good mark.
The slightly spicy White Wine Prawn Aglio Olio ($18.00) is more like it. Despite the sauce being saturated with the delectable flavor of garlic (due to it containing an abundance of thin garlic slices), a light, delicious wine flavor could be discerned. The prawns, though a little mushy, were packed with juice.
Fried in butter, oil and egg, then used to sandwich lightly creamed chicken, the Croque Madame Cajun ($15.00) toast was satiating; it could easily feed two! And the egg on top had been cooked to the desired degree. The fries were adequately hot, albeit on the salty side.
You might scoff at paying so much for French Toast with Maple Syrup ($9.00). To be honest, so did I - until I tried it. This isn't any ordinary run-of-the-mill dessert. Three huge, well-cut slabs of golden brown toast, piled on a plate, were drenched in maple syrup and paired with cold Crème Chantilly, or in layman terms, whipped cream.
They were springy, pushing back when prodded with a fork. Cutting them revealed an eggy interior that gave off a delightful scent of butter, and the crust did not become soggy even after some time. The cream had a soothing and delicate flavor that meshed well with the toast.
I initially thought the 'marshmallow cloud' description of the Hot Chocolate ($7.50) was just a marketing gimmick, but the cup really contained the actual thing! So adorable! The puffy marshmallow had a grainy surface which was perfect. Almost resembling melted dark chocolate, the drink was a little bitter and rich, coating the spoon in a layer that dripped off slowly when the spoon was lifted out.
The staff were quite thoughtful; as I was at a corner seat out of range of the counter, they would occasionally pop by - in a non-intrusive manner - to see if I needed anything. The girl serving me told me to take my time with the menu and she would come back shortly, which she did. She also cleared the empty plates fairly quickly.
In addition to the main courses, Pique Nique serves pretty batches of teatime snacks. My verdict? Come here for their desserts, especially their french toast.
