Reading countless reviews and articles about Department of Caffeine has whetted my appetite for this cafe. I finally visited it on my off day!
It's a fifteen-minutes walk away from Outram MRT station and located inconspicuously, the only indication of its presence being two plain looking wooden panels inscribed with the cafe's name.
Inside, the atmosphere is lively and one feels at ease here. Bizarre pictures frame the walls and the furniture setup falls into place like pieces of a puzzle. The counter has a display window showcasing freshly baked goods and raw ingredients like salmon slabs rubbed with dill and lemon.
Tables have a small number (ours was A2, the table that kept getting blasts of cold air because we were seated near the air-con) at their sides; this is the number the staff will ask you for when you place your orders.
This is how scrambled eggs should taste like. Heaped onto toasted muffins split in half, they were deliciously creamy yet not watery. Combine with smoked salmon and what we have is the Smoked Salmon Scramble ($16.00) - a match made in heaven!
Although the Lobster BLT ($18.50) is the newest kid in town, it scores pretty well on my list. While the buns' crispy outer section means that crumbs flaked off with every movement (something I wasn't fond of), its fillings are not to be trifled with. There were bacon strips grilled to perfection, chunky and succulent lobster flesh, and mayonnaise mixed with fish roe to give a sour kick. I was cynical of its ability to fill the tummy, but the fries helped pacify any remaining hunger pangs.

The Buttermilk Waffles with New Zealand Natural premium vanilla ice cream ($15.00) came with a choice of either butter rum bananas or blueberry compote and strawberries. The waffles turned soggy quickly, a point that worked against them; though fairly crispy on the outside, internally they did not hold up well. They were flavored with aromatic cinnamon, which tasted scrumptious with the warm, rum-soaked banana slices and a side jug of syrup.
Even the drinks here have character. The cringe-worthy Elderflower Lemonade ($5.50) was biting on the tongue, while the Mango, Yogurt, Fresh Mint ($6.50) drink was a smooth blend tinged with the refreshing sweetness of its key ingredients.
