De'Pop Culture - End of A Legend

De'Pop Culture is closed as of 1st January this year; its owner, Ms Adeline Wang, cited financial problems as one of the main reasons.

However, because it was a great cafe, this post is dedicated to it.

Decorated with furniture that explode with color - like a hot pink aircon and a clock splattered with rainbow dots - the cafe gave off a cheery and energetic vibe. Tabletops doubled as attractive art pieces. Self service for the cutlery, spices and sauces.

The Green Tea Latte ($6.50 for hot, $7.50 for cold) had a controlled sweetness to it, with a forceful, powdery green tea aftertaste. It was a tad difficult to swallow the bitter dregs.

Marble Mocha ($5.90) tasted delicious with its hearty combination of chocolate and coffee. Just the drink to warm one up on a chilly night!

Bacon Surprise ($10.90) is the only starter that had its picture featured on the menu, and with good reason. Ironically, this also took away its 'surprise' aspect.

It consisted of streaky bacon, wrapped like a ribbon, around three different fillings. A side helping of salad, tossed in sesame dressing and garlic bits, finished the dish.

The first was mildly scrambled eggs that held off most of the cream and butter. It nestled on a base of browned bread, fried to an appealing crisp texture which resembled the bacon. Because I like my scrambled eggs to be creamy, the second and third appealed to me more. They were similar to the first, except they were topped with the more appetizing fried egg and portobello mushrooms respectively.

The Carbonara ($14.90) came with home-made cream sauce, bacon slices, cubes of Parmesan cheese and a poached egg. The menu proclaimed the pasta was fettuccine, but it didn't look like it.

My friend, who ordered this, could not stop raving about it. It was unlike any other carbonara I've ever tried. The sauce, mixed with the oozing yolk, gave an interesting twist to the dish.

Something compelled me to take the Waffles: Caramel ($11.50), although I'm not a huge fan of the sugary confectionery. And the gamble paid off!

The waffles had a solid, satisfying "crunch" when I sank my teeth into them, with the batter proving to have a pleasant taste. They were definitely one of the crispiest waffles in town, compared to the lackluster softness of many others. A generous sprinkling of granulo in almost every cranny added even more volume.

The caramel ice cream succeeded in blending the right notes of sweet and salty together. It also melted very slowly, and as a result the waffles remained firm for a long time.

De'Pop Culture was truly one of the more promising players in this industry, and I was saddened to learn of its closure.
