Eggs & Berries whips up exactly what their name implies! No prizes for guessing the two main ingredients in their food.
They specialize in eggs cooked via a wide range of techniques, and swarm their desserts and drinks with berries.
Their Signature Fries come in three flavors: Sea Salt & Vinegar ($7.90), Spicy Cajun ($8.90), and Truffle & Mushroom ($9.90).
Scattered with mushroom powder, they were cut thickly; the truffle aftertaste was mild and could have been stronger. Some might balk at the relatively small portion, but to me this was good enough. I dislike wasting fries and most places serve enough to feed an army.
This is an interesting take on how to build your own burger. While the idea of choosing your patty isn't new, selecting the type of bun certainly is. There are four kinds - Smoked Paprika and Beetroot, Turmeric Curry, Spinach Pesto, and Charcoal Squid Ink. I settled for the Provence Herbs Lamb with Smoked Paprika and Beetroot Bun ($13.90).
Mixed with spices, the minced lamb patty was tender and its 'meaty' flavor was not overpowering; a bit of variety was also tossed in with the presence of some fried bacon strips that were light on salt. The egg yolk had set a little (though it oozed readily when cut into) and the white was wobbly in certain areas and solid in others. When eaten in conjunction with the soft buns, the burger was simply scrumptious.
The sides scored as well! The potato wedges were one of the better ones out there, having crisp skins and interiors the consistency of mashed potato. Salad drizzled with aromatic sesame sauce rounded off the dish.
The Pink Fish Steak ($19.90) consists of salmon fillet, hash browns, poached egg, and the usual salad with sesame sauce.
The lemon-butter sauce was delicious but not outstanding - I could not see the difference between this and the lemon-butter sauce used by the western stall at the coffeeshop near my house. It was a good complement to the salmon, which was quite fresh.
I really enjoyed the hash browns. Beautifully crunchy on the outside, they exuded a fluffy firmness within. The poached egg, served in a cute white bowl (I initially thought it was part of the egg), also tasted great.
The Tutti-Frutti ($10.90) pancakes was irresistible. Topped with abundant fruits like peaches, kiwi and bananas, and a dollop of whipped cream, it was also the most value for money among the three varieties of pancakes offered. Soft and porous inside, the warm pancakes were quick to soak up the syrups poured over them.
The Berries Special waffles ($8.90 for petite, $15.90 for grande) could have been crispier; I found them on the soft side, though the subtle sweetness of the strawberries and blueberries compensated. Spam time with the raspberry syrup!
Oh. my. gosh. Just look at what the Homemade Creme Brulee ($4.90) is served in - totally befitting the restaurant's name! The sugared layer and custard were pretty delicious too. I wanted so badly to bring the glass egg home!
The Hot Chocolate ($5.50) looked dilute when stirred; in reality it was anything but. Thick and richly flavored with chocolate, the drink was satisfying.
Mel Current ($6.50) was a cooling concoction of watermelon, blackcurrent and vanilla, with the watermelon flavor being the easiest to detect.
The Banana Sunset ($6.50) was equally refreshing, a blend of orange, banana and vanilla.
Eggs & Berries is an astonishingly underrated place despite its pastel decor, efficient staff and good-quality food; I visited three times and there was hardly any queue.
