This choice is always available at Gelare!
My colleague was the one who introduced to me the small, crowded cafe-cum-eatery. Resembling a peaceful meadow on one side and showing off bright murals at the other end, the place gave off an energetic and vibrant vibe.
Attention-grabbing signboards gleefully emphasize on afternoon discounts and staff privileges. Their lunch promotion sets are quite attractive, ranging from $9.90 to $15.90; all come with Soup of the Day and a choice of either coffee or tea. I opted for the Lasagna Meal ($15.90).
The Mushroom Soup is overflowing with its main ingredient; each spoonful is crammed full of juicy mushroom bits and the soup steers clear of the persistent butter-cream aftertaste that plagues many others. Unfortunately, it is too weighed down by its watery feel for the first impression to stick.
It's the first time I've ever ordered lasagna, and the experience was mouth-watering! The Chicken Lasagna is served steaming hot. Lasagna sheets wrapped around pea-sized minced meatballs, mushrooms, cheese and onions, are baked to a gloriously succulent composition that translates to heavenly, tomato-saturated forkfuls. The portion was also comfortable: not too little to make you yearn for more, but not so much that it starts grating on your taste buds.
The Latte is quite normal, with some brown sugar thrown into the mix.
My colleague chose the Roasted Chicken Sandwich Meal ($13.90). The bread was a little dry and hard, but this was offset by the chicken's enchanting flavor, crisp lettuce and fresh tomatoes.
The A la Mode Treat, or Classic Waffle with a Scoop of Ice Cream ($11.60), was what we were eagerly anticipating. As seen from the image above, the ice cream flavors available daily will often change. We chose the interestingly named Macadamia Nut as our topping, complete with maple syrup and whipped cream.
Baked to an appealing firmness, the warm, slightly buttery waffle readily soaked up the maple syrup, and the light whipped cream proved a compatible match. While the ice cream had a lovely creaminess, we both agreed that the macadamia nuts scattered within tasted weird.
NUH staff are entitled to a 10-20% discount at the Gelare outlet at NUH.
