Love is simple, a concept that's promptly demonstrated at RoyceMary Cafe. Opened by a husband-and-wife team, the cafe is dedicated to delivering 3 'C's and 1 'T' to customers - Communication, Comfort, Commitment, and Trust.
Ambience/Decor
Pretty garden props arranged strategically in the display window beckon coyly to passers-by, with its caricature logo of the happy couple overhead. Everything symbolizes sweet romance!
Quotes on love and fate cuddle under shelves stacked with dainty kitchen tools and beautiful flowers.
A mosaic of coffee tiles, positioned right at the back, emits an air of comfort. At the same time though, it feels like an odd distraction from the 'love is in the air' theme.
Service
The crew has been nothing but friendly, unassuming, and efficient from the beginning. Each visit felt like home as they make it a point to engage in conversation with their patrons.
Food
Strong color coordination made the Matcha Hazelnut Latte ($6.30) artistically pleasing to the eye. The foam on top did not congeal despite the drink standing for some time, earning plus points.
The combination of nutty hazelnut and down-to-earth matcha - two of my favorite flavors! - was just heavenly.
All Gourmet Sandwiches are available as either ala carte or set meals (served with Soup of the Day and Iced Honey Lemon. One may upgrade the drink to any hot or iced coffee with an additional $3.90).
The Rosemary Chicken Ciabatta ($11.90 for ala carte, $14.90 for set meal) comprises thin slices of chicken sprinkled with rosemary seeds and sandwiched between floury bread. Pepper shaken over baby tomatoes, salad drizzled with vinegar, and a handful of potato chips acted as the sides.
Although the ciabatta was enticingly crusty, the chicken was a complete letdown. Dry and bland, its absence would not be missed. The lifesaver came in the form of the soft, creamy cheese spread, which took away that insipid taste.
For dessert, the Matcha Lava Cake ($8.90) came in a gorgeous display of whipped cream, blueberries and cut strawberries. Ripe and sweet, the fruits complimented the subtle flavor of the cake. The molten center could be improved as it wasn't exactly appealing - it felt like condensed milk mixed with green tea.
Verdict
The drinks speak louder than the food.
If you are looking for somewhere serene to spend a lazy afternoon sipping coffee, RoyceMary Cafe's the right place.

The Ham and Cheese Croissant ($7.90 for ala carte, $11.90 for set meal) was slightly better, but still failed to impress. Good thing that the ham wasn't overly salty.
