Windowsill Pies lives up to its name, looking just like a little cottage in the woods that churns out baked treats for weary passers-by.
Step inside and you will see it has a homely air about it, resembling the chaotic contents of a kid's toy box. Colorful strings twine around a pillar in the center of the cafe. Paper planes dangle from puppet strings attached to wooden crosses, while a large, cuddly teddy bear rests serenely below two fake trees dressed in festive colors.
At the very back, there is a small kitchen where meals are prepared. In fact, it is so small that the staff seemed to have some difficulty moving about. Maybe that affected their speed, because snail-like is the most apt description I could think of to describe their service.
They took the initiative to offer water, something we were appreciative of. However, the girl was a little unsure of the menu choices. As the food here is presented as drawings, you'll need to guess what they are. Hope your observation skills are good!
The Hot Mocha ($6.00) had a lightly burnt coffee aftertaste. It was nice enough, but I had almost drained the entire cup by the time the other courses arrived. And yes, that includes the soup. We waited over 35 minutes!

Containing thin strips of onion and bell peppers, the Roasted Peppers and Leek Soup ($5.00) carried the distinctive capsicum flavor, and I could taste potato and tomato. Hard crusts of bread littering the side readily soaked up the soup when dunked, making for a delicious starter.
At first glance, the Apple + Bacon + Cheese Sandwich ($11.00) looked ordinary. But it turned out to be a beautiful balance of sweet and savory with its warm and sticky apple slices (which reminded me of apple strudel filling) stacked together with bacon and blanketed in gooey cheese. The light crunchiness of the potato salad was also interesting. We unanimously agreed that this was the best main course of the lot.
Unimpressed with the Bacon + Egg + Mushroom Sandwich ($11.00), my friend commented that she could whip up eggs of that caliber at home. The scrambled eggs were on the creamy side and seasoned well with pepper, and while they tasted good with the grilled mushrooms, it was nothing special. We also felt that the portion of bread was rather small.
I seldom regret my orders, but there are always exceptions. In this case, the Salmon with Dill and Lemon En Papillote ($15.00) was not worth the 45 minutes' wait and the price.
The salmon looked partially undone, its ripe pink flesh in the throes of rawness. Possibly because of the glaring presence of lemon rind, the broth was extremely sour and bitter. It was like drinking diluted, sugarless lemon juice. The bitterness laced the garlic bulbs, tomatoes, and all other ingredients, killing any chance of them breathing some life back into the dish. I left a quarter of the food untouched, unable to continue through the shuddering spoonfuls.
We got a slice each of Pecan Pumpkin ($7.00) and Grasshopper ($7.50).
The Pecan Pumpkin was the lovelier choice. The top layer was essentially cold and smooth puree with a gentle hint of pumpkin. Mixed with the generous quantity of pecan nuts within the biscuit-like base, it was sweet in a satisfying way.
The Grasshopper, on the other hand, had some kind of taste that I disliked. Perhaps it was that artificial mint flavor? I am a fan of mint but it felt overdone in this pie. The hard bottom layer was like dark chocolate minus the heavy bitterness.
Dessert might have perked me up, but it couldn't soothe away my distaste at the salmon and the appalling speed of the service. I say, just save your calories for Windowsill Pies' signature pies.
