I did a double take when I first chanced across the Charlie Brown Cafe. A life-sized statue of the character himself in a chef's attire stood at the entrance, the menu balanced between his outstretched hands, while a few Snoopy sculptures froze in various poses around the cafe.
The cafe is well lit, emphasizing on its matching color theme of tan brown and pistachio green. They sell lots of Charlie Brown-inspired soft toys and products.
Their drinks menu excited me. It's rare to find a cafe that serves warm milk, and even harder to get it in different flavors. But here at Charlie Brown Cafe, they have broken the norm with FIVE types - Plain, Chocolate, Vanilla, Caramel, and Hazelnut!
I just had to get the Hazelnut Milk ($4.50 for regular, $5.00 for large). The hot (not lukewarm or warm, yay!) milk is beautifully creamy, intertwining with the prominent taste of hazelnut, and topped with a layer of froth, the kind that kisses your lips when you take a sip. I found myself desperately wishing the cafe was near my house in the west, just so I can drink this more often.
The Spicy Chicken Bolognaise Pizza ($13.80) has a slightly dry, biscuit-like crust. The combination of melted cheese, chicken bolognaise and tomato sauce came together nicely with the lightest tinge of spiciness. It was served piping hot too!
Chef's recommendation, the Turkey Ham & Mushroom Cream Pasta ($12.80), wasn't deserving of the title. Speckled with black pepper and button mushrooms, the noodles were not too hard and broke easily upon biting. The cream sauce flowed smoothly, good for those who like their sauces to be more runny. However, the onions were weak to the point of having almost no flavor, and the turkey ham bordered on boring. Nothing really stood out for me.
One of my colleagues ordered the Fish and Chips ($13.80). The fries were sufficiently salty and crispy, though they gradually became limp as they cooled. Didn't taste the fish but according to her, it was a bit fishy.
My other colleague got the Linus' Raspberry ($9.80). We liked its presentation, but with raspberry puree sandwiched between the two pancakes, plus the chocolate ice cream, the dessert's sweetness came on a little too strongly.
In summary, at Charlie Brown Cafe, the theme impresses more than the food itself. Bonus points for the waiver of the 10% service charge, as well as the staff being efficiently quick.
